Rolex Middle Sea Race 2008
Wednesday, January 02, 2008

The Rolex Middle Sea Race course is 606 nautical miles long and is sailed anti-clockwise.Starting on the 18th October. The Start line is in Valletta Grand Harbour Malta, beneath the RMYC premises in Fort Manoel, the fleet head north along the eastern coasts of Sicily up towards the Straits of Messina, this notorious stretch of water is famous for whirlpools and mythical sea monsters that legends are built from. Mt Etna is usually visible on the fleets port side, billowing ashes and lava throughout the night. Once through the Straits, the course leads north to the Aeolian Islands and the active volcano of Stromboli emitting a constant stream of multi-coloured lava, an awesome sight by day or night where the yachts turn west to the Egadi Islands. Passing between Marettimo and Favignana the crews head south towards the island of Lampedusa leaving Pantelleria to port.
Once past Lampedusa the fleet turns northeast on the final leg towards the South Comino Channel and the finish at Marsamxett Harbour. En route the crews take in an amazing diversity of landscape and sea conditions, all of which combine to create the attraction and challenge of the race.

SAILING IN GIBRALTAR
. 18 Knots of wind greeted the team on board Seawolf for their debut race at the Sotogrande Winter League. An excellently timed start led to the reward of being the first boat to the windward mark, however the lead slipped away with a series of errors on the downwind leg, a lot of hard work and teamwork on the following 2 legs enabled them to climb back up the fleet, to finish in a very respectable 4th place. Congratulations to all on board. The next race training weekend is on the 19th of Jan 2008, please contact us if you want to be part of the next sailing team to compete in Gibraltar Bay.Sotogrande Race Dates
