Candidates will be set tasks to demonstrate their ability as skipper of an offshore cruising yacht and may also be asked questions on any part of the syllabus for all courses except Yachtmaster Ocean. Training will be given specifically to areas assessed that appear to be weak. The yachtmaster preparation course is aimed at people with a high standard of sailing along with a good understanding of basic sail trim, the course will advance this knowledge and teach you new skills as well as improving your existing sailing ability, in readiness for your exam but equally importantly giving you skills that will be beneficial throughout your on going sailing period. The content of the prep course will depend on the needs of the candidates but you should expect to spend a lot of time cruising at night and carrying out various challenging boat handling exercises.
Upon completion of the Yachtmaster preparation course an independent RYA yachtmaster examiner will come aboard the yacht to conduct the exam. This is often quite a daunting experience as each candidate can be examined in excess of 12 hours. Modern examiners want people to pass there yachtmaster exam and will do all they can to make this happen, they are not looking for racers or show offs, just good sailors who are prepared and ready to take the yacht out and demonstrate safe efficient sailing.
Practical courses include:
- Accommodation onboard,
- Use of lifejackets & foul weather clothing,
- Marina fees & fuel.
- All breakfasts and lunches are provided and 3 evening meals.
