The Competent Crew course is designed to provide you with the basic knowledge needed to be a useful crew member of a yacht. The RYA Competent Crew course is all practical and the aim is to have fun whilst following the RYA syllabus - there is no exam. The course is suitable for:

Anyone wanting to learn to sail and experience how to sail a cruising yacht
Anyone with some experience of sailing dinghies but little or no cruising experience

Course Details

Sailing a yacht is fun but at first can look a little complicated with ropes all over the place, knots to learn and lots of nautical terminology. The objective of the competent crew course is to provide you with this basic knowledge and confidence enabling you to be a useful member of a yacht crew.

This RYA Competent Crew course is run for 5 days starting Monday through to Friday during which time you will be encouraged to take an active part in all aspects of sailing the yacht. The course has no formal exam and has the objective of providing the following skills in a relaxed environment, often in the company of other students new to the world of yachting:

basic seamanship
helming
personal safety
sail handling
ropework

We try to make the courses as much fun as possible, whilst still covering the RYA syllabus, there is no formal exam at the end of the week, as this week is a course and not a test.
